Are you ready to start your next crochet project? This free pattern is an easy project with a great texture. Make it for yourself or a friend – it makes the perfect gift.
This easy afghan pattern features only a few basic stitches through the entire blanket. Made mostly with double crochet stitches, this blanket is perfect for any crocheter (even you’re a beginner).
Even though the stitch pattern is easy, this crochet lapghan has an amazing texture and great drape (movement).
When I asked my Instagram followers what I should call this blanket, almost everyone mentioned the beach or waves. With that in mind, I have named this blanket The Sea Glass Throw.
You can use any type of yarn you want, as long as it’s worsted weight. I love using a soft acrylic yarn or a 100% cotton yarn for blankets (check out the best yarns for crocheted blankets).

How to Change Colors:
On the last stitch of the row, do not pull your working yarn through the final two loops to complete the last double crochet stitch. Instead of pulling the yarn you’ve been working with through those final two loops, place the new yarn on your hook and pull it through the last two loops. Be sure to leave a long tail on both colors so you can weave your ends later.

Adjusting the Size of This Lap Blanket Crochet Pattern
Here are some common blanket sizes to get you started:
If you want to make a custom size, follow the directions below:
The multiple for this blanket is 4 + 2.
This means that you will chain in multiples of 4 until you reach the width that you want and then add 2 more chain stitches.
For example:
32 x 4 = 128 and 128 + 2 = 130
In order to keep the stripe pattern, the number of rows is in multiples of 17 + 5.
For example:
17 x 5 = 85 and 85 + 5 = 90
Each set of 17 adds about 9 inches to your blanket. The final 5 rows adds just under 3 inches.
The stripe pattern is as follows:
- 5 Rows Spa
- 1 Row White
- 2 Rows Meadow
- 3 Rows Spa
- 4 Rows Meadow
- 2 Rows White
Repeat this stripe pattern as many times as you want, then add 5 rows of spa to complete your blanket.
The fun thing about this pattern is how easy it is to play with different colors. Whether you want to stick with my color scheme or choose your own, the simple stripes in this blanket make it a great project!

Beautiful beautiful colours. But I’m trying to imagine how many ends there must be and how long it will take to weave them all in 😳. That thought puts me off ☹️ Wish there was a way around all those loose ends !
Lauren says
I always think it will take me forever, but it hardly ever takes me longer than 30-45 minutes to weave ALL the ends on a blanket 🙂
Laurie Koelle says
Hi, I’ve made a few of your dishcloths. They turned out fantastic. I was wondering what you do with the left over yarn. There’s enough left to make something small, but I need a few ideas.
Thank you
Lauy

Hi Laura. I love the Sea Glass Lap Blanket! I am confused by the difference between the numbers of rows in the stripe pattern and the color pattern. Is it across and back for one row? The # of rows for Spa don’t change like they do for Meadow and Snow White.
Lauren says
Hi, Rhonda. It isn’t across and back for one row. It’s just across 🙂

Beautiful and easy to chet blanket. I enjoyed your video also. It was clear and easy to follow along, just wish you would have shown how to change colors and how to do the border. It would be helpful to beginners.
