Learn How to Crochet the Best Quick Blanket – So Simple!
Are you looking for a quick, easy crochet project? Learn how to make a cozy blanket with just a simple stitch. Perfect for beginners and experienced crocheters alike!
You may have noticed that it’s been a while since I’ve released a new free pattern. Life has been busy, but I’ve missed releasing new crochet patterns. I’m excited to share another new free crochet pattern with you.
This new crochet pattern features some beautiful colors and easy stitches. You’d never know that this beautiful blanket uses a variation of one of the basic crochet stitches, making it perfect for even a beginner crocheter.
You’ve probably made your fair share of projects featuring the single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet stitches. But, you might not have used this type of stitch before.
The ad-free PDF is available here.
This blanket features the extended half-double crochet stitch. This stitch is very similar to the half double crochet, but adding one tweak to the basic steps makes this stitch a little bit taller and changes the texture enough to make this throw blanket a good choice.
This stitch is so easy, you probably won’t even need to practice it before you begin the simple pattern below. But, if you’d like to make sure you’ve mastered the stitch before you start, I recommend chaining 10-15 and working a few rows back and forth to get the rhythm of the stitch.
For this free pattern, I’ve used a soft worsted weight yarn in shades of green and cream. While the stripe pattern might look random, it repeats, making it easy to achieve the same look no matter what size blanket you’re making.

Materials You’ll Need
- J/10 Crochet Hook (This is a 6.00 mm hook)
- 980 yards of worsted weight yarn (see size chart for the yardage for all the other sizes)
- I used acrylic yarn, but any type of yarn will work.
- I used YarnBee Pearlspun in the following shades. This yarn is available from Hobby Lobby.
- Pearl (290 yds)
- Moss (290 yds)
- Matcha Mondays (400 yds)
- Tapestry Needle
Pattern Notes:
- As shown, this blanket measures approximately 34″x40″.
- A chart is provided that has all the information for six different sizes ranging from baby to king size.
- The turning chain does not count as a stitch
- If you know you crochet loosely, go down to a smaller hook.
- If you use a different yarn, I recommend using one size larger hook than what the yarn label recommends.
- Watch the video tutorial here.
Special Stitch:
- Extended Half Double Crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch. Pull up a loop. Yarn over, pull yarn through first loop on your hook. Yarn over, pull yarn through all three loops on your hook.

Optional Border:
If you’ve been around Daisy Cottage Designs for any length of time, you know that I love the clean lines of a borderless blanket. I’m not sure why it makes the blanket look more modern to me. If you think adding a border is a good idea, here’s the pattern I would use.
Join Pearl anywhere on the edge of your blanket, NOT in a corner.
Round 1: single crochet evenly around the entire blanket, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner. Sl st to the first stitch to join. Ch 1. Don’t turn.
Round 2: sc evenly around the entire blanket, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each ch 2 space from the previous round. Sl st to the first stitch to join.
Cut yarn and weave ends.
Adjusting the Size of this Blanket
Any starting chain length will work for this blanket making it easy to adjust the size of this blanket! Simply chain until your project reaches the width you want and repeat the stripe pattern until you reach the size that you want.
The stripe pattern for this blanket is as follows:
- 5 rows matcha
- 2 rows moss
- 3 rows pearl
- 2 rows matcha
- 1 rows pearl
- 4 rows moss
- 2 rows pearl
Simply repeat this over and over until you reach the length you want, and then add 5 rows of matcha to finish it off!
The chart below includes 6 different sizes – the throw blanket size is the perfect size for the back of your couch! Or, use the baby blanket pattern if you’d like to make a gift for an upcoming baby shower. This extended double crochet blanket, as a new beginner I JUST MIGHT be able to do🤞🤞🤞, thanks to your fantastic, explicit directions that just gives one confidence. I am a visual learner however and just wish I could see your video on it, is there one? As a beginner, pattern instructions are still hard for me.

I love this pattern. I wanted a throw in school colors, so I used a plum, goldenrod and white. I also crocheted in back loop only for more texture. It turned out really well. Thanks for the pattern; all of yours are beautiful.

Sounds beautiful! I’m so glad you’re happy with how it turned out!

Will it lay flat after it’s done?
Thank you so much.

Hi, Sheri. Mine laid flat the entire time. Is yours ruffling some?

As soon as I saw this blanket pattern, I knew it would be perfect to make using the UGA football team colors (red, black and white) in a blanket for my neighbors. It turned out exactly as I hoped and I love it! Thank you for creating such a great pattern. I love making afghans/blankets and your patterns are always so beautiful!
