Modern Crochet Blanket Pattern
This modern crochet blanket pattern has had me excited for a couple weeks now. I loved watching the colors build and work together.
I feel like I’ve been on a blue or beachy kick with my colors lately, and I’m totally ok with that. When I asked my Instagram followers what I should name this blanket, almost all of the responses had a nautical theme. I ended up settling on “The Sand and Sea Throw,” but nobody’s going to search for that so we had to go with a more SEO-friendly title for the post.
If you’re not ready to make the blanket now, but you don’t want to forget about it:

Modern Crochet Blanket Pattern
Materials:
- J-10 (6.0 mm) Crochet Hook – these are my favorite hooks
- 3 Skeins Yarn Been Soft & Sleek in White
- 2 Skeins Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek in in Light Blue
- 1 Skein Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek in Mustard
- 1 Skein Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek in Navy
- If you’re using a different yarn, you need approximately 1250-1500 yards of worsted weight yarn. Approximately 600 in white, 300 in light blue, 250 in mustard, and 100 in navy.
- Alternate yarn selections in the same shades are provided at the end of this pattern.
- If you’d like other color ideas, check out the new color palette series.
Special Stitch:
- Mixed Cluster Stitch:
- In crochet “lingo”: dc2tog over 2 stitches, hdc into the second of those two stitches (you work a hdc into the stitch where the dc2tog finished).
- Step-by-step: yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, pull up a loop. Pull yarn through the first two loops on your hook. Yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop. Pull through the first two loops on your hook, pull through all three loops on your hook. HDC in the same stitch.
- Still sound a little bit confusing? Here is a video tutorial on this stitch:
Pattern Notes:
- Instructions for changing the size of this blanket are at the end of the pattern.
- As written, the finished Blanket measures approximately 32×38 inches.
- You will not work into the turning chain in this pattern. Chains do not count as a stitch when turning.
- The border on this blanket is optional. The photos above show the blanket without a border.
- Here is how I change colors: When coming to the end of a row, dc2tog as usual, but when you get to the last step (pull through three loops on your hook), pull through with the new color to finish the stitch. Chain 1, and continue with the pattern as written. There are other ways to change colors, but this is my preferred method. This video will explain the method I use: https://youtu.be/To94LjguPfA

With white, Chain 97.
Row 1: dc in the second chain, dc2tog starting in the same chain. work a hdc into the chain where the dc2tog was finished (called a mixed cluster stitch from here on out). work mixed cluster stitches across to the last two stitches. dc2tog over the last two chains. ch 1, turn.
At the end of each row you should have 47 mixed cluster stitches with a dc on the first end and a dc2tog on the other.
Row 2: dc in the first stitch, work a mixed cluster stitch starting in the same stitch. work mixed cluster stitches across to the last two stitches. dc2tog over the last two stitches. ch 1, turn.
Rows 3-5: Repeat row 2. Join light blue yarn at the end of row 5.
Rows 6-7: Repeat row 2. Join mustard yarn at the end of row 7.
You will continue working the pattern same way until you’ve completed your blanket.

Optional Border
I think the borderless look of this blanket is part of the modern appeal, but if you are a border-lover (and that’s just as fun) or if your edges don’t look perfectly neat, here is an optional border.
Once you’ve completed the body of this blanket and woven your ends, pull up a loop in any corner and chain one.
Round 1: sc around the entire blanket (I worked 110 stitches on each of my unfinished edges and 1 sc per stitch on each of my finished edges), working 3 sc in each corner. Sl st to the first sc to finish the round. Ch 2.
Round 2: *dc2tog in one stitch, dc in the next stitch around the entire blanket* working a *dc, dc2tog, dc* into all four corners.
Adjust the Size of The Blanket
If you want to change the size of this blanket, chain until you have the length you want, but be sure you end on an odd number of chains.
If you’re making this blanket significantly bigger, I would add 1-3 rows to each color to keep the overall look the same. But, have fun experimenting with color!
Chain an odd number.
Row 1: dc in the second chain, dc2tog starting in the same chain. work a hdc into the chain where the dc2tog was finished (called a mixed cluster stitch from here on out). work mixed cluster stitches across to the last two stitches. dc2tog over the last two chains. ch 1, turn.
Row 2: dc in the first stitch, work a mixed cluster stitch starting in the same stitch. work mixed cluster stitches across to the last two stitches. dc2tog over the last two stitches. ch 1, turn.
Rows 3-end: repeat row 2 until you reach your desired length.
