Pattern Notes:

  • The ch 2 at the beginning of the first 4 rounds does not count as a stitch. You will work a dc into the first stitch. You will be joining rounds in the top of the first true dc stitch rather than in the top of the turning chain.
  • Rounds 6-23 are worked in spiral. You will not sl st to join at the end of each round. You will want to mark the first stitch of each round to keep track of where you are.
  • There’s a FAQ section at the end of this post.

To begin, ch 3.

Round 1: 12 dc into the first ch. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Ch 2. (12)

Round 2: 2 dc in each stitch around. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Ch 2. (24)

Round 4: *2 dc in the first stitch, 1 dc in the next 2 stitches* around. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Ch 2 (48)

Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as first dc and chain 1). *dc, ch 1 in the next stitch* around until you get to the last stitch. In the last stitch, hdc, ch 1. (48 dc, 48 ch 1 spaces)

Crochet in Spiral

Beginning on round 6, you will be working in spiral. You will not join at the end of each round. Mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker so you don’t lose your spot.

Round 6: hdc, ch 1 in the first chain 1 space. *dc, ch 1* in each chain 1 space

Rounds 7 – 23: *dc, ch 1* in each ch 1 space. You will not sl st at the end of each row. Simply put your hook into the next ch 1 space and continue working in spiral.

At the end of Round 23, join with a sl st to the first dc of the round (you should have a stitch marker in that stitch).

Round 24: ch 2, dc in each ch 1 space. Sl st to the top of the first dc to join.

Round 25: ch 2. dc between each dc of the previous round.

You will now be working your handles. Remember, the ch 2 does count as a stitch now.

Row 1: ch 2, dc in the next 9 stitches. (10)

Row 2: ch 2, turn. dc2tog in the next two stitches, dc in the next 5 stitches. dc2tog in the last two stitches. (8)

Row 3: ch 2, turn. dc2tog in the next two stitches. dc in the next 3 stitches. dc2tog in the last two stitches (6).

Rows 4-15: ch 2, turn. dc in the next 5 stitches (6).

If you want your handles to be longer, just add more rows to the handles).

Cut yarn and weave ends.

Skip 15 stitches and work the second handle on the other side of the bag. You’ll work the second handle exactly as you did the first. Single crochet the two sides of the handle together.

Me either. I'm thinking that a chain might be added in between each double crochet…? I'm not sure

  18. Kennedy Holder says:

Is it like the handles are done on each side then joined together at the top?

Hi! Like others I am confused about rows 6-23. Do you DC ch 1 and then do the next DC or do you DC and do a sc in the ch 1 space from the previous row? Also do you have a pattern made to make it a bigger size? I love the bag and would love to do one for myself! Thanks

  27. Sheryl Mills says:

HI – any chance you have available the pattern for the larger bag? Thank you.

  28. Stacey Brennan says:

Can someone please explain the dc ch1 in next stitch. Do you dc and sc in the same stitch or dc and do a ch1 seperate before the next dc?? Thanks!

  29. Do you have any pictures of the handles? I'm confused how to finish them? Love this bag and would love to make a matching on for myself! 41. Allison Clay says:

If I continue adding rows from row 3 adding 12 stitches each time will this be the correct way to make the bag larger?

  42. Ananthalakshmi Seshadrinathan says:

I just loved your bag. Simple to follow pattern. I applied this patten with few changes like increased the bottom rows, made a band on top with handles on both sides. I have pinned yours and my finished bag in my board

http://www.pinterest.com/ananth313/crochet/

43. Kayla Ison says:

If I wanted to make this bigger could I just double the instructions? And what pattern did you use for the flower?

  44. Bee Carroll says:

Thanks, Lauren! I love this bag!!! It's adorable! To save a little time.. I'm wondering if the ladies that want an 'adult size' pattern, have tried using a larger hook… It does make it a little looser, although it gives it more stretch as well. 🙂
Thank you again, Lauren! I look forward to trying more of your patterns.

  45. purelilyliving says:

I love this bag and I love the flower too! Do you have a pattern for the flower? Thanks! =)

  46. I, like so many others, am having trouble transitioning from making circles to crocheting in the spiral at row 5 to 6. I cannot find a tutorial on how to do this and it doesn't seem like the author of this pattern is providing any answers. I guess I'll have to abandon this project and seek out another tote pattern to make but I would really appreciate a mini-tutorial here to show how to

  47. Lauren Brown says:

Hi, Cheryl. I just replied to you via email like I've done the other commenters.
