Color Block Blanket Crochet Pattern
As I’ve mentioned before, I love creating beautiful color block crochet blankets. However, many of them tend to be tedious and slow. Since I have crochet project ADD, this isn’t good for me. When I’m working on afghans or other blankets, I want to have something that’s going to work up relatively quickly and give me a lot of “bang for my buck” as far as time goes. This blanket does just that.

Let me just start out by saying the stitch is a lot of fun and has a great texture. But, when you’re reading the pattern, it’s going to seem a little odd at first. Don’t despair – it’s not a difficult stitch and I created a video showing you exactly how to work the stitches. You can watch it below so please be sure to do so before you get started – or refer back to it as you’re working.
I used two different brands of yarn for this blanket. I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in the shade Mustard for the pop of color. For the other shades, I used Paint Box Simply Aran in Washed Teal, Misty Gray, and Champagne White. Despite the fact that I used warm and cool shades, I love the way these colors worked together. It took about 2 skeins of each for my blanket. It’s a child sized blanket or lapghan, in my opinion.

Materials:
- 8 skeins of Paintbox Yarn (I used 2 skeins of Washed Teal, 2 skeins of Champagne White, 2 skeins of Misty Gray, and 2 Skeins of Vanna’s Choice Mustard). If you’d like to use a different yarn, you’ll need to purchase approximately 400 yards of each color.
- I Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle & Scissors
Pattern Notes:
- For those who like to read crochet charts, there is a chart at the end of this pattern.
- For this pattern, you will be working into the ch 1 spaces across and then into the second chain of a chain 3 at the end of each row.
- To make this pattern larger, chain any even number.

Special Stitch:
- dc2tog on foundation row: yarn over, insert yarn into ch, pull up a loop. Pull through two loops. Yarn over, insert hook into the next ch, pull up a loop. Pull through two loops. Pull through 3 loops.
- dc2tog in subsequent rows: yarn over, insert yarn into ch 1 space, pull up a loop. Pull through two loops. Yarn over, insert hook into the next ch 1 space, pull up a loop. Pull through two loops. Pull through 3 loops.
Using Mustard, Chain 132.
Foundation Row: Beginning in the 4th chain from hook, *dc2tog, ch 1* across to the last stitch. Dc in the last stitch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: begin a dc2tog in the first ch 1 space, finish the dc2tog in the next ch 1 space, ch 1. *dc2tog by starting in the same ch 1 space, and finishing in the next ch 1 space. ch 1* across. Once you have reached the ch 3, finish your last dc2tog around the ch 3, ch 1, and then dc into the second chain. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 3 – 20: Repeat Row 2 using Mustard. Cut yarn and weave ends.
Row 21: Join Champagne White yarn with a sl st. Ch 3. begin a dc2tog in the first ch 1 space, finish the dc2tog in the next ch 1 space, ch 1. *dc2tog by starting in the same ch 1 space, and finishing in the next ch 1 space. ch 1* across. Once you have reached the ch 3, finish your last dc2tog around the ch 3, ch 1, and then dc into the second chain. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 22 – 40: Repeat row 2 using Champagne White. Cut yarn and weave ends.
Row 41: Join Washed Teal yarn with a sl st. Ch 3. begin a dc2tog in the first ch 1 space, finish the dc2tog in the next ch 1 space, ch 1. *dc2tog by starting in the same ch 1 space, and finishing in the next ch 1 space. ch 1* across. Once you have reached the ch 3, finish your last dc2tog around the ch 3, ch 1, and then dc into the second chain. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 42 – 60: Repeat row 2 using Washed Teal. Cut yarn and weave ends.
Row 61: Join Misty Gray yarn with a sl st. Ch 3. begin a dc2tog in the first ch 1 space, finish the dc2tog in the next ch 1 space, ch 1. *dc2tog by starting in the same ch 1 space, and finishing in the next ch 1 space. ch 1* across. Once you have reached the ch 3, finish your last dc2tog around the ch 3, ch 1, and then dc into the second chain. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 62 – 80: Repeat row 2 using Misty Gray. Cut Yarn and weave ends.
If you started with a different starting chain, you might want to adjust the number of rows you complete with each color. I knew what measurements I wanted my blanket and that I wanted each block to be the same size so it was easy for me to figure out how many rows of each color to do.
