Block Stitch Blanket Tutorial (Easy Crochet Pattern!)
Ready to learn a new crochet stitch? The crochet block stitch is a quick, fun stitch that has a great modern look. I loved making this beautiful crochet blanket, and hope that you enjoy the free crochet pattern that you’ll find in the blog post below.
I loved making this block stitch pattern. The combination of double crochet stitches and chain 2 spaces creates a beautiful finished project that almost looks like a granny stitch.
This versatile stitch could be used to make a pretty scarf or just about anything else, but I loved using it as a fun twist on a standard double crochet baby blanket. It uses beginner stitches which means it’s great for crocheters at all skill levels.
Don’t want to make a baby blanket? No problem! I’ve included several sizes below and give you all the instructions for making your finished project any size you wish.
The colors of this blanket reminded me of a beautiful terracotta pot, so if you’re searching for this pattern in my Etsy shop, you’ll be able to find it listed as “The Terracotta Shores Blanket.”
Materials:
- J/10 Crochet Hook (6.00 mm hook)
- Approximately 1100 yards of worsted weight yarn

- River Ripple – 1 skein
- Linen – 1 skein
- Cherry Blossom – 1 skein
- Tapestry needle and scissors for weaving ends.
- Ad-free PDF for easy printing, if preferred

Abbreviations:
- sc – single crochet
- st – stitch
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- RR – River Ripple
- CB – Cherry Blossom
Block Stitch Blanket Crochet Pattern:
Using White, work 115 chain stitches.
Row 1: sc in the second chain from the hook and in the next st. *ch 2, skip 2 chains, sc in the next ch* across until one stitch remains. Sc in the last ch. Ch 1, turn. (37 ch 2 spaces made)
Row 2: dc in the first stitch. Work 3 dc stitches into each ch 2 space across. Dc in the last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (37 clusters plus 2 dc on each end equals 113 dc stitches total)
Note: to work into a chain 2 space, you insert hook under the ch 2 space, not into the actual chain stitches.
Row 3: single crochet in the first stitch and in the space between the first double crochet and the first cluster. *ch 2, sk 3 dc, sc between the clusters* across the row. Sc between the last cluster and the final stitch of the row. Sc in the final stitch of the row. Ch 1, turn. (37 ch 2 spaces)
Repeat rows 2 and 3 for a total of 87 rows following the stripe pattern below. You will end on a single crochet row.
The stripe pattern is as follows. Remember to count the single crochet rows and not just the double crochet rows.
- 2 rows of RR
- 4 rows Linen
- 8 rows CB
- 6 rows White
- 6 Rows Linen
- 4 Rows RR
- 6 Rows White
Need some help with color changes?
On the last stitch of the row, do not pull your working yarn through the final two loops to complete the last double crochet stitch. Instead of pulling the yarn you’ve been working with through those final two loops, place the new color yarn on your hook and pull it through the last two loops. Be sure to leave a long tail on both colors so you can weave your ends later.

Adjusting the Size of This Block Stitch Crochet Blanket
The multiple for this block stitch crochet blanket is 3+1.
This means that you will chain in multiples of 3 until you reach the width that you want and then add 1 more chain stitch.
For example:
38 x 3 = 114 and 114 + 1 = 115
In order to keep the stripe pattern, the number of rows needs to be in multiples of 36+20. If you’re not making a striped blanket, just work until your blanket is the desired length.
36 is the stripe pattern and the 20 is the 10 white rows on each end of the blanket.
For example:
36 x 5 = 180 and 180 + 20 = 200
Each set of 36 adds about 13 inches to your blanket. inches. The white rows add about 4 inches to each end.
The stripe pattern is as follows:
- 2 rows of RR
- 4 rows Linen
- 8 rows CB
- 6 rows White
- 6 Rows Linen
- 4 Rows RR
- 6 Rows White
