Free Sock Monkey Crochet Pattern {Toddler Size}

Who’s excited about a free sock monkey hat crochet pattern? I love all the crocheted sock monkey hats that kids are wearing these days. All the sizes of this adorable hat are available in my in my Etsy shop, but I wanted to share the toddler size with you today. It should fit kids with heads between 18″ and 20″.
Supplies:
-I Crochet Hook
-Worsted Weight Yarn
-Buttons
-Tapestry needle
1-3 Years:
Ch 2.
Round 1: 9 sc into the first chain. Sl st to the top of the first real sc (NOT into the slip stitch). Ch 2, turn. (9)
Round 2: 2 dc into each stitch. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Ch 2. (18)
Round 3: 2 dc into each stitch. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Ch 2. (36)
Round 4: *1 dc into the next stitch, 2 dc into the next stitch* around. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Ch 2. (54)
Round 5: dc in each stitch around. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Cut yarn and weave ends. (54)
Round 6: Join second color with a sl st. Ch 1, hdc in the same stitch (in other words, the ch 2 does not count as your stitch) and in each stitch around. Sl st to the top of the first hdc. Cut yarn and weave ends. (54)
Round 7: Join third color yarn with a sl st. Ch 2, dc in the same stitch and in each stitch around. Do not sl st or ch 2 at the end of this round. You are now working in spiral until you reach the earflaps. (54)
Rounds 8 – 12: dc in each stitch around. (54)
Round 13: dc in each stitch around. Sl st in the next stitch. (54)
Stop here and add one round of sc if you want a beanie. If you’d like an earflap hat, keep going without cutting yarn.
Earflap Directions:
Ch 1.
Row 1: hdc in the same stitch and in the next 12 stitches. Ch 1, turn. (13)
Row 2: hdc 2 together, hdc in the next 9 stitches, hdc 2 together. Ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 3: hdc 2 together, hdc in the next 7 stitches, hdc 2 together. Ch 1, turn. (9)
Row 4: hdc 2 together, hdc in the next 5 stitches, hdc 2 together. Ch 1, turn. (7)
Row 5: hdc 2 together, hdc in the next 3 stitches, hdc 2 together. Ch 1, turn. (5)
Row 6: hdc in each stitch across. Ch1, turn. (5)
Row 7: hdc 2 together, hdc in the next stitch, hdc 2 together. Fasten off. (3)
You will now need to work the second earflap. On the front of the hat, skip 16 stitches and begin the second earflap by joining yarn with a sl st. You will work it exactly as you did the one above.
Border – Choose 1:
Final Row Same Color: Single crochet evenly around the entire hat working two stitches in the corners of the earflaps.
Final Row Different Color: Join your second color yarn and single crochet evenly around the entire hat. Work two sc into the corner stitches of the earflaps. Fasten off and weave all ends.
Ears (2):
Ch 3.
Round 1: 8 dc into the first ch. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Ch 1. (8)
Round 2: 2 hdc into each st. Sl st to the top of the first dc. Ch 1. (16)
Round 3: 1 hdc into each of the next 13 stitches. Sl st in the final 3 stitches. Cut yarn and leave a long tail for sewing on the hat. (13 hdc, 3 sl st)
Mouth:
Using the first color, ch 12.
Row 1: hdc in the second chain from hook and in the next 10 stitches. Fasten off and weave your ends. (11)
Row 2: Join white yarn with a slip stitch into any stitch and hdc evenly around. Work 2 hdc in each corner stitch. (26)
Braids:
For each side of the hat, cut 9 strands of yarn (I usually do 3 strands each of 3 different colors) approximately 30 inches long. Fold them in half and pull the “loop” through the hat. Pull the loose ends through the loop to attach the yarn to the hat.

Just made this hat. While adorable I will have to find someone other than the toddler I made it for to give it to. It fits my 8 year old son loosely.
How would I adjust this pattern to fit an adult size head? Thanks so much, just love this hat and my 19 year old daughter would love it too, would like to make it for her and I am a beginner crocheter, so I don’t know how to adjust patterns to fit different sizes yet!!
Hi, Kelly. If you use a bigger hook, you might be able to get it to fit an adult 🙂 Also, you could google adult earflap hat. Make that one, then add the monkey features to the front. Hope this helps!
hi. are you suppose to ch2 turn on all the rows of this pattern?
No. Parts of this pattern are worked in spiral so there would be no ch 2.
why is there only 1 ch2 turn in the first row and just ch2 in the others

Hi there! Thanks for the wonderful pattern!! Just tried to crochet this beanie for my 2 1/2 year old but ended up with a beanie that would fit a newborn! Anyone know where I could be going wrong??
What size hook did you use? Did you use worsted weight yarn? We all crochet differently, so you might need to go up a hook or two 🙂
So, my son is almost 2 and has a big head I guess! I made this for him and it’s darling! But a tiny bit too small! I’m a new crocheter. Do all I need to do is make the hat again but with one size bigger crochet hook? Thanks!
Hi! I’m in the middle of this pattern… On round 8. I have never worked in spiral before but it seems easy enough. The problem I that the dc leaves a huge gap when I start back at the top of round 9. I this normal or am I working the dc spiral wrong?
Hmm. I don’t have a huge gap, but you should be able to close it up when you’re weaving your ends.
