If you love making the softest baby blankets, this Chenille Baby Blanket is the perfect crochet pattern for you. This blanket is the softest thing I’ve ever made.
Going in, I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t enjoy working with chenille yarn – I’ve heard horror stories! But, I didn’t find it bad to work with at all. I used a worsted weight chenille yarn. In my opinion, it’s the chunkier versions that are harder to work with.
If you’re still nervous, don’t worry! I’ll give you my top tips for working with chenille, as well as an alternate yarn in the same shades.

About the Stitches
Because the fluffiness of chenille yarn can make it more challenging to see the structure of each stitch, it’s helpful to use a pattern that’s worked between stitches. The tight v-stitch was the perfect option.
This blanket uses what I like to call the “tight v-stitch.” It’s similar to a basic v-stitch, but it eliminates the ch 1 space in order to create a stitch pattern that’s a little bit tighter.
For the border, I used a combination of single crochet rounds and double crochet rounds. It provided just the right “frame” for this blanket.

About the Yarn
I don’t like working with chunky chenille yarns, so I knew that I needed to find a good worsted weight option for this project.
I used Loops & Threads Skinny Chenille in the shades Starfish, Hummingbird, Swan, and Blue Bird. I grabbed them at my local Michael’s, but they can also be purchased from Amazon or Walmart.com.
This yarn is amazingly soft, and it did not shed much at all as I was working with it.
Tips for Working with Chenille Yarn
As I’ve mentioned, some people don’t like working with chenille or velvet yarns. Here are 3 tips to keep in mind so you don’t have any issues.
- Start Slowly! Give yourself a little while to get used to working with this soft, fluffy yarn. You’ll find your rhythm and your a speed up after a few rows.
- Pay Special Attention to Tension! Having uniform tension is always important, but even more when working with chenille yarn. Check your tension after every row, just to be sure you don’t have any loose sections.
- Secure your ends! I don’t usually knot my ends together when I change color, but I did when working with this yarn. I didn’t want to worry about anything unraveling. A tiny bit of fabric glue on the ends can help keep things locked in — totally optional but a great hack that some people do.
Yarn Substitutions
Hobbii’s Toucan Fine yarn is another worsted weight chenille option, though I’ve never put it to the test myself. I’d love to make this blanket using the shades Pink, Violet, Sky Blue, & White.
If you’d prefer not to use a chenille yarn but you love the shades I used, I found the perfect colors in an acrylic worsted weight yarn. Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek in the shades Soft Pink, Light Blue, and White are almost exact matches. The purple shade is Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in the shade Orchid.

How to Change Colors
On the last stitch of the row, don’t pull your working yarn through the last two loops to complete the stitch. Instead of pulling the yarn you’ve been working with through those final two loops, place the new yarn on your hook and pull it through the last two loops. Be sure to leave a long tail on both colors so you can weave your ends later.
The video tutorial includes instructions for changing colors.

Border Pattern
Rounds 1: sc evenly around the entire blanket, working 3 sc into each corner. Sl st to the top of the first st to join.
Round 2: ch 1. Sc around the entire blanket, working 3 sc into each corner. Sl st to the top of the first st to join. Cut yarn and weave ends.
Round 3: Join White. Dc around the entire blanket, working (dc, ch 2, dc) into each corner. Sl st to the top of the first st to join. Cut yarn and weave ends.
Round 4: Join Coral. Sc evenly around the entire blanket, working (sc, ch 2, sc) into each corner. Sl st to the top of the first st to join. Cut yarn and weave ends.

Adjusting the Size of this Blanket
Adjusting the size of this blanket is easy! In order for the pattern to work, your starting chain needs to be an even number.
Any number of rows will work for the pattern as it’s a one row repeat.
The chart below includes 10 common sizes. Stripe patterns for each size are provided after the chart.
